1984 Discussion Series & Surveillance Cinema Series

Over the run of 1984, A.R.T. will co-host with the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard’s Kennedy School a series of special panel discussions around questions of surveillance, totalitarianism, and the role of technology in popular uprisings. These discussions are free and open to the public.

February 23, 2016, following the evening performance: Discussion with James Waldo, Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Computer Science and Chief Technical Officer, Harvard University, on topics of cyber security.

February 24, 2016, following the evening performance: Discussion with Archon Fung, Ford Foundation Professor of Democracy and Citizenship and Acting Dean of Harvard Kennedy School, on issues related to control and secrecy in the U.S.

March 1, 2016, following the evening performance: Discussion with Merilee Grindle, Edward S. Mason Professor of International Development and Former Director of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, on retrieval of memory during an authoritarian period in Latin America.

March 2, 2016, following the evening performance: Discussion with Anthony Saich, Daewoo Professor of International Affairs and Director, Ash Center for Democratic Governance & Innovation, Harvard Kennedy School, on new social media in China.

February 28, following the matinee performance: Discussion with Alberto Mora, who led efforts in the Department of Defense to oppose Bush administration legal theories that allowed harsh interrogation tactics at the U.S. detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Discussion with Juliette Kayyem, a national leader in America’s homeland security efforts in government, the academy, private sector, and journalism.

There will also be regularly-scheduled talkbacks with cast members following Wednesday and Saturday matinee performances.
