9 days/8 nights in Tokyo and Kyoto | Activity level: Light | Group Size: Max 15

  • Explore the “art of performance” in Tokyo and Kyoto with Artistic Director Diane Paulus and Director of Artistic Programs/Dramaturg Ryan McKittrick.
  • Celebrate the A.R.T.’s international scope and Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director Diane Paulus’ Tony Award-winning production of Pippin, with an all-star Japanese cast, and performed entirely in Japanese.
  • Experience familiar plays like Diane Paulus’ Pippin performed in Japanese, the famous all-female Takarazuka Revue, as well as traditional Japanese performances such as Kabuki, Noh, and Geishas.
  • Take part in an authentic tea ceremony, visit the famous Tsukiji Outer Market, and enjoy a private cooking class with a top-rated chef.
  • Discover ancient temples and holy shrines and get lost in regal gardens of castles and palaces.

Itinerary

Please note that this is a tentative schedule for our time in Japan. Many of the performances and activities won’t announce their exact times until 2019. While this itinerary displays an accurate snapshot of the activities, the order and timing may vary. Any major changes to the itinerary will be communicated to travelers ahead of time. Tokyo

JUNE 15—Arrive at Narita/Haneda airport and check-in to your room at the Palace Hotel to enjoy your first evening in Tokyo. This is a free day for you to acclimate to the time difference as JST is 14 hours ahead of EST. While there is no group dinner scheduled, guests are encouraged to take this time to explore the city on their own or dine at the hotel and rest.

JUNE 16—Spend the morning getting to know the A.R.T. staff, local tour guide, and fellow travelers at a breakfast welcome reception prior to heading out to a Kagura performance at Meiji Jingu Shrine. Then take in the famous all-female Takarazuka Revue at Tokyo Takarazuka Theater and experience lunch like a local—during the 30 minute intermission! B L D

JUNE 17—Explore the bustling Tsukiji Outer Market in the morning and spend lunchtime learning how to make a quintessential Japanese-style dish, alongside a world-renowned chef. Discover the world of classical Kabuki theater at the Kabukiza Theatre and spend the evening meeting members of Harvard Club Japan during a reception hosted for us in Roppongi Hills. B L D

JUNE 18—We’ll continue our tour of Tokyo by coach in the morning and travel to Theatre Orb as a group to see Pippin, starring Japanese-stars Yu Shirota and Crystal Kay. Toast to A.R.T.’s exciting international presence, alongside Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director Diane Paulus at dinner following the performance. B L D

JUNE 19—Our final morning in Tokyo will be spent together on one last coach tour of the city, but the afternoon will be left up to you! Add-on options will be available, but guests are encouraged to take advantage of Tokyo’s foodie scene during this day. From Michelin Star cuisine, to pop-up ramen booths on the street, there’s plenty left to explore. 

 

Kyoto

JUNE 20—Upon checking out of our hotel in Tokyo, we’ll ride the bullet train first-class to Kyoto, at speeds up to 200 mph/hr. After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll explore two temples: Kinkakuji Temple and Ryoanji Temple, and partake in a special tea ceremony to further explore traditional Japanese customs. Your bags will be waiting for you at the Hyatt Regency upon arrival that afternoon. B L D

JUNE 21—Take advantage of this free day in Kyoto! Activities will be suggested and an add-on day trip will be an made available, but otherwise this day is entirely up to your leisure. B

JUNE 22—The penultimate morning and afternoon will be yours to finish exploring Kyoto. In the late afternoon we’ll travel to Nijo Castle and take in one final performance, the Noh Experience, at Kawamura Nohgaku Theater. Of course we can’t leave Kyoto without watching a Geisha performance during our final farewell dinner together. B D
