The Moth StorySLAMs are steadily spreading all over the map, gathering people and stories from all over the country. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston have multiple shows each month. The Moth is open to anyone with a five-minute story to share on the night’s posted theme. The brave of heart, or those with stories they’re aching to tell, prepare personal, true tales. When the doors open, storyteller hopefuls put their names in The Moth Hat. A half-hour later, names are picked, and one by one, storytellers take the stage. Each person has just five minutes! The ten featured stories are scored by teams of judges selected from the audience. Each StorySLAM generates a StorySLAM winner. After ten SLAMs, the winners face off in our GrandSLAM Championships. Come sign up to tell a story, or just enjoy the show!
January’s theme is Achilles Heel. Prepare a five-minute story about weaknesses and soft spots. Vulnerable situations. That look your dog gives you, your secret love of harlequin novels, your fear of goldfish, your need to have the last word. Recklessly falling in love or getting struck down from the hilltop. Regale us with tales of your personal kryptonite.
February’s theme is Transit. Prepare a five-minute story about planes, trains, and automobiles. Getting from A to B and notable moments along the way. The Boeing 747, the F train, or the Volvo. That attractive stranger on the plane, the time your soup spilled on the bus, or crying in traffic. Regale us with tales of commutes, fastened seat belts and left turns.

Foul-mouthed drag legend Lady Bunny usually shies away from politics—because it’s one hell of a train wreck right now. But she doesn’t shy away from gender politics. From the new pronoun we’re forced to learn every time Will Smith’s son puts on a dress, to Caitlyn Jenner reaching out to Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz to become his ‘trans ambassador’, Bunny feels that it’s time for the gloves to come off.
Featuring new parodies of Adele, RENT, and Bruno Mars punctuated by some actually insightful social commentary (well, she thinks so anyway) and trashing the current overemphasis on political correctness, Bunny breaks down some of the latest buzzwords that we’re all supposed to remember for every occasion. The self-proclaimed ‘pig in wig’ brings her trademark huge hair to astound and offend—prepare to be challenged.

Kit Yan is an award-winning, queer, trans, Asian-American poet from Hawaii. Queer Heartache is his solo slam poetry show that explores his identities, asks what queer hearts and families are made of and interrogates the forces that constantly work to break them apart. Queer Heartache is a testament to the resilience of queer love in all its forms—between cis and trans siblings, lovers, pride parade attendees, and many more—in the face of heartbreaking barriers everywhere from the dating pool to the medical establishment. If you’ve ever had your heart broken, wondered how your pets self-identify, or wanted to tell someone your gender is none of their business, this show is for you.
Queer Heartache was part of the 2016/17 OBERON I.D. Festival and we are thrilled to have it back for two nights in 2017/18. The show has also been featured in the 2015 Chicago Fringe Festival, where it won the Artist's Choice, Audience Choice, and Spirit of Fringe awards, and 2016 San Francisco Fringe Festival, where it won Volunteer's Choice and Best of Fringe, and had its New York premier at the first annual 2016 Transgender Theater Festival. A print adaptation is out now through TransGenre Press (2016).
