I really appreciated the honest reckoning question and it made me think very deeply about whether or not we actually learn from the past. An honest reckoning with the past is important because when we forget the past we usually repeat it. An honest reckoning also helps us understand where we went wrong and where we could build off of it. Our entire society is built on the past and we need to acknowledge how we got where we are. Forgetting or not understanding the past prevents us from creating a more coherent and productive future. In 1776 I saw a lot of flaws in that government that are still
