In creating the declaration of independence, I think that freedom mattered, but more importantly to them, I think that keeping a specific type of people in power mattered. At the time of the declaration, those founding fathers wanted to be free, but they wanted it for the wrong reasons. Not to make everyone equal, but to make themselves even greater than others on the scale. An honest reckoning with our past helps us move forward together by helping us accept and admit to all the horrible things that we did as a country in the past. We need to learn from our earlier mistakes.
