In creating the Declaration of Independence, what mattered is the complete separation of the new colony from the British. It is stated that all people have equal liberty and unalienable rights that are protected by the government. If the government tries to take the rights or jeopardize them, people can revolt.
An Honest reckoning helps us "wake up" and look back at our history. Our history is something that people ignore but deserves way more attention. We can look deeper into the failures and faults of our own country which may have gone unnoticed by many.
