A.R.T. and Problak Kick Off Allston Mural Creative Process

A.R.T. and Problak Kick Off Allston Mural Creative Process

A.R.T.’s new home will feature one of the largest pieces of public art on Harvard University’s campus—a 200-foot-long mural designed by acclaimed Boston muralist Dr. Rob “Problak” Gibbs.

The mural will be a vibrant tapestry that weaves together Boston’s diverse and dynamic voices—a mirror held up to Boston that reflects its past and celebrates its future promise.

A.R.T. offers it as a lasting gift to inspire connection and community pride.

The Inspiration

Guided by a core design principle of universal access, A.R.T. and its architects explored how the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Center for Creativity & Performance could extend the theater’s impact beyond its audiences and into its broader community. Drawing on Allston’s rich tradition as a hub for music, performance, and art—especially murals—they designed the building’s north wall to display a mural.

A.R.T. has commissioned acclaimed Boston muralist Problak to partner with the theater and lead the mural’s creation. Measuring 200 feet in length, it will be Problak’s first in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood.

Art is typically categorized as two- or three-dimensional—for me, there is a fourth dimension: the shared story. That is what makes the mural or theatrical experience live on, long after it’s created.

Be a Part of the Mural’s Creation

During summer and fall 2025, A.R.T. and Problak will host free workshops in neighborhoods across Boston. At each workshop, a muralist with work on local exhibition will lead residents of all ages in conversations and activities that explore the past, present, and hopes for the future. These sessions will build connections among participants and spark ideas and imagery that will help shape the mural design.

Workshops are where I hold a mirror up in front of people and ask them to look at themselves, so they understand that this creative process starts with them.
