As they recount and enact story after story of women who have been on the receiving end of male entitlement, aggression, and abuse, “Hear Word!’’ inexorably adds up to a damning portrait of toxic masculinity — and, ultimately, a call for female solidarity and empowerment.

“It takes you right into the heart of abuse,” says Jared, “but you leave the theater armed with awareness and action.”

It makes for a fun night out, particularly for audience members who opt for standing-room tickets and see the show unfold around them, as director Jenny Koons uses Oberon’s flexible space to good advantage.

Indeed, life is imitating art in more ways than one with “Burn All Night.” Mientus’s initial inspiration for the show — about a group of hard-partying Manhattan millennials facing the prospect of adulthood and the possible end of the world while delving deep into the night life — was drawn from his own experiences after first moving to New York.

Mientus collaborated with the Brooklyn-based Teen Commandments on the new musical, starting this week at the American Repertory Theater.

I was tired when I walked in and fired up when I left. The show is propelled by ingenious direction and up to the minute choreography.

Though an escape, “Burn All Night” is a very of-the-moment piece. The most vivid parallels exist between our imploding political situation and uncertain environmental future and the apocalyptic tune of the show.
