With his retro-look (think Bette Page) and basso rasp with which he cracks jokes and sings an eclectic mix of songs, from pop to jazz to rock, Arias is a true original and legendary drag pioneer.

“I grew up wanting to be a stand-up comedian and a weirdo,” says queer performer Dane Terry. “Then I started playing piano and discovered that you were allowed to have feelings.”

Through the grandiosity of Elton John and a slight touch of Father John Misty’s refashioned Americana, Terry’s storylines easily bait listeners — and leave little for them to complain about when they’re reeled in.

A key part of the Cartel’s mission is to break down the boundary between audience and performer and to open up the expectation of what a dance performance can be: it’s a party AND a show, an experience AND a story.

The evening works as a cohesive whole because of its overriding sense of community. With the audience constantly moving around to change the playing space, the dance floor becomes a living, breathing thing that constantly adapts to what will be performed.

It’s haute-performance theory with a house party vibe.
