Theater needs an audience to fulfill its mission, to engage with the entertainment being produced on the stage.

The show features 10 of Nigeria’s top actresses performing monologues and songs that address the trials the country’s women endure.

There are so many forces at work in this awful story: political, social, religious, certainly misogyny. But Nigerian playwright Ifeoma Fafunwa says that if the world is to make an honest reckoning of how and why women are oppressed, women must ask themselves, “What’s my responsibility? What did I do to create this world?”

The struggle for women’s rights takes a much different form in Nigeria.

The one who transforms in a heartbeat from a harangued village woman to a sexy afrocentric feminista, in such convincing fashion, that they exist as two instead of one, line so perfectly drawn that the only worthy diagnosis will be that she has a multiple personality disorder…

I laughed, I hollered, I clapped, I shouted, I cried – the gamut of emotions that struck me through this play was astounding! 

Ms Fafunwa is back again with her stories of female discrimination and ultimate empowerment, but this time, her production company of choice is iOpenEye and her cast members include Joke Silva, Elvina Ibru and Ufoma Ejenobor.

The play which is by women, of women, directed by a woman, and importantly not only for women but for all, takes a mirror to our society and explores how we treat our women.
