When the American Repertory Theater’s (ART) production of “Cabaret” opens, Lexington High (LHS) grads will hold sway on stage and in the wings.

The American Repertory Theater held a meet and greet for its staging of Kander and Ebb’s dark musical Cabaret, which will feature The Dresden Dolls’ Amanda Palmer in a gender-bending turn as the Emcee.

Whether she’s fronting the Dresden Dolls, portraying conjoined twins, covering Radiohead on the ukulele, or singing songs with fiance Neil Gaiman, Amanda Palmer imbues her work with a theatrical flair.

Constant motion, fine directing mark American Repertory Theater’s ‘Cabaret’

Make no mistake – the nightmarish quality of Cabaret is omnipresent, accentuated by the ghostly, powdery makeup adorning the faces and bodies of the Kit Kat Dancers, the lonely, hollow sound of a train whistle, the blinding white spotlight emulating an oncoming train, and the gruesome closing scene that sears itself into your retina.

“Cabaret,” which runs until October 30 at OBERON, forces audience members to enter a world that at first glance might seem like a far cry from the streets outside. It’s self-aware and understands the possibility for theater to become removed from the patrons it entertains, while still feeling emotionally relevant.
