“I’ve always been passionate about the power of musical theater because I feel it can reach audiences in a way that builds bridges,” said Paulus, the A.R.T.’s Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director.

“The show is not just a cabaret, and it’s not just a trip down memory lane. It’s pulling together seven performers who have a history with our theater to dig into the power of musicals.”

“I felt like so many of the examples of art that was held out to me as something I should work toward did not reflect my experience. It did not reflect my family as people of color, as immigrants, as people who grew up poor, as women. It really forced me to acknowledge that my education was missing and there was a lack of theater, of narrative, that reflected my experience, and therefore the experience of a lot of people who looked like me,” she says. “I decided that if I’m going to change the landscape I may as well start with where I started, which is my family.”

“This show is very polarizing, but very important,” said Kalember, whose husband, actor Daniel Gerroll, is also in the play. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., Kalember was raised in Louisville, Westport, Conn., and Detroit. She and Gerroll, who have three adult children and two grandchildren, live in Weston, Conn. We caught up with Kalember to talk about all things travel.

It may be relatively early in the 2017 theater season, but it seems highly unlikely that anything you will see on Boston stages (or anywhere else) this year will pack the kind of visual, aural and emotional wallop that Arrabal – now making its United States premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge – will deliver to the senses.
