The history of magic is full of revelations, reversals, and enduring mysteries. The Conjurors’ Club celebrates and expands this legacy.

In fashioning their live, interactive, online magic show, “The Conjurors’ Club,” creators Vinny DePonto and Geoff Kanick wanted to foster the up-close intimacy and tactile connectivity of pre-pandemic, in-person theater.

“I think magic can work even better online because I’m not even there in the room with you physically,” Jeanette Andrews said. “You have complete control of the situation. But, well, I have a lot of surprises up my sleeve and I don’t want to give too much away.”

When a small band of magicians present The Conjurors’ Club, they will be sticking to the basics, keeping their online presentation as intimate — and as real — as possible. This intimacy is fundamental to what they do. “Without an audience, magic cannot happen. It’s just a person alone in a room doing fancy choreography,” said performer and magician Geoff Kanick, one of the show’s two co-creators.

Huang Ruo was born in 1976—the year the Chinese Cultural Revolution ended—in Hainan, a small province of more than 200 islands in the South China Sea. His earliest musical memory is of attending the local Hainanese opera, where audience members brought their own benches to the outdoor theater.

“Duality exists in my music, as it does in life and in the Universe. I am interested in contrasting points, the space and time between them, and how these two points travel, interact, interchange, and integrate with one another. I believe that who and where we are, and when we exist ultimately defines our music.”
