Paulus told me that’s exactly what Steinem hoped for when she decided to share her story in this format. “I know for her the only point of revisiting her life was to be able to share it in a way that would give courage to everybody who comes to see this to say my story has value, my journey is a process, and it’s never too late.”

Director Diane Paulus and actor Patricia Kalember sit down to discuss “Gloria: A Life,” a new play about Gloria Steinem at the American Repertory Theater.
Review - Gloria: A Life
A remarkable history of the last 70 years as seen through the events of a single life. There is no one I would not encourage to see this production.
EXHILARATING… Sure, [the performers are] preaching to the choir, but they’re also aggressively invoking the choir to get off its dead ass and do something.
[Kalember as Steinem] invites us all in, including the men in the audience. I was enthralled, as were the people sitting around me.
POWERFUL AND AFFIRMING…the play has two parts, and it’s hard to decide which has more impact. A stellar cast bring history to life…Can theater make a difference? Oh, yes.
Kalember plays Steinem with just the right amount of friendliness, humor and self-effacement, so convincingly that it’s hard to separate the real Gloria from the actress.
INSPIRING AND ILLUMINATING, ‘Gloria: A Life’ offers an extraordinary glimpse of who we are, how far we’ve come, and how much farther we still need to go.
