Wig Out! blends McCraney’s sharp ear for sassy dialogue with his love of the classics and his insight into the struggle LGBTQ individuals endure to find a home and create a family, whatever that might look like.

Wig Out! is a complex narrative that centers around young, queer people of color who are defying the norms of identity, sexuality and gender, and finding a chosen family within the drag community.

As an extension of his semi-retired show, Self-Portrait as an Opera is “part satire, part self-portrait and part aesthetic exorcism,” Keckler has said, and while it has autobiographical elements, it also explores how different kinds of media and art relate.

Kit tells his story through stylized slam poetry with intensity and honesty. Verbally the crafting of this fifty-minute piece is taut with rich imagery. 

Changing a name might seem like a minor matter for those who are changing their gender identities and, for some, facing challenges like finding knowledgeable doctors, trying hormones and experimenting with painful hair-removal procedures. But many who have gone through the switch say a name change sends an important message to the world, a message solidified and made official with a court’s approval.
