Paradise Lost: 1930s and Today

Our upcoming production Paradise Lost voices the anger and hope of a family struggling to find solid ground in a sinking economy. The Gordon family, at risk of losing all they have worked for, strive to preserve their trust in each other and in the promise of their nation. Written by one of the greatest twentieth-century playwrights, Paradise Lost is a poetic, humane, and distinctly American drama that examines the impact of money and greed on family, business, and love.

Dramaturg Whitney Eggers found several interesting photos and articles during her research for this production. This article is about eviction riots in Cleveland in 1933, two years before Paradise Lost premiered, and economic woes faced in the same neighborhood now. This article explores the parallels between 1937 and now.
