Succinct and Successful – January Interns Reflect

FEB 2, 2015

Our three weeks in the A.R.T.’s Marketing Department have been an immersive and exciting crash course in all things theater marketing, and we’re sad to go! In under a month, we have worked on a wide range of projects, including shows that open at the end of the season and Father Comes Home From The Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3), which starts performances on the last day of our internship. In our short time here, we’ve truly experienced every phase of the marketing process.

Even though we’ve only spent a few weeks in the office, we have felt like trusted and important members of the marketing team since the first day. We’ve helped create content for programs, brochures, advertisements, and listings for both print and digital publications. We’ve also been able to contribute to the long-term operations of the department by updating and organizing databases of contacts, media quotes, press coverage, and awards.

Our inclusion went far beyond logistical tasks. We’ve also had the opportunity to sit in on meetings with staff members from many of the A.R.T.’s departments, which has taught us about all of the theater’s operations and how marketing fits into them. We were encouraged every day not just to listen but also to share our thoughts and collaborate on the department’s creative projects, which have ranged from lobby displays to email correspondence to partnerships with other organizations. Although our experience here has been short, we’ve learned a lot about marketing art and running a theater company, and we look forward to continuing our involvement with the A.R.T.!
