The GoodheART Report – Reasons You Should Go See Father Comes Home From The Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3)
Nina Goodheart, A.R.T. intern and gap year advocate, is back to explain why you (yes, you) should go see Father Comes Home From The Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3).
1. It’s really good.
I almost stopped the list right there, because that’s what really matters. Trust me (even though I work here), it’s really good.
But I’m a chronic over-writer, so here are some more reasons you should go see this really good show.
2. It’s written by the magnificent Suzan-Lori Parks.
3. It is the second A.R.T. show of the season to feature a person playing a dog.
4. It’s based on Greek drama and set during the Civil War, but the characters say “True dat.”
5. The cast is incredibly diligent, enthusiastic, and talented—as in, they (both the actors who joined us from the recent production at the Public Theater and the actors who were performing the material for the first time) did the first read-through without holding their scripts. (Also, one actor said she liked my hair, so I’m definitely a big fan of hers.)
6. The language is dazzling. From soul-searching monologues to casual conversations, every word is evocative.
7. I almost cried the first time I read the script. (If you know me in real life, this may be less impressive.)
8. Everyone at the A.R.T. actually can’t wait to see it. So hurry up and buy tickets before we keep them all for ourselves.
9. It is hugely relevant to current events. You will get chills.
10. It’s the sort of play that reminds us why theater matters. It’s REALLY GOOD.
Have I convinced you yet? Are you going to come see Father Comes Home From The Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3)? Are you going to come find me in the audience and weep with me over how much you’re enjoying it? You should. And if you’re not convinced, go read Reason #1 again—or maybe TIME(http://time.com/3597441/top-10-plays-musicals/) or The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/29/theater/father-comes-home-from-the-wars-by-suzan-lori-parks-at-the-public-theater.html).
