Join us for an evening celebrating A.R.T.’s enduring legacy and exciting future, from the Loeb’s storied stage to the new creative horizons taking shape in Allston.

The 2026 Gala will feature cocktails and dinner at Harvard’s new David Rubenstein Treehouse in Allston, followed by a Gala performance of A.R.T.’s world-premiere musical Black Swan at the Loeb Drama Center. Transportation between the two venues will be provided.

The annual Gala supports the A.R.T.’s engagement initiatives and groundbreaking programming that expands the boundaries of theater, engaging hearts, minds, and bodies to imagine collective pathways forward. More about A.R.T.

Honoree

Steve Johnson is a tech and engineering entrepreneur and activist. In 2018, he founded Notable Systems Inc., a company transforming healthcare revenue cycle processes through AI technology. Before launching Notable Systems, he co-founded ChoiceStream, an advertising targeting software company. In the early 1990s, with an unfinished PhD in economics behind him, he founded Johnson-Grace Company, a data compression firm that developed the ART image file format. After AOL acquired Johnson-Grace in 1996, he became vice president of AOL’s Software and Technology Development division, where he led the creation of leading-edge media, telephony, and broadcast products. Johnson is the author of A Thousand Miles From Care, chronicling his decade-long pursuit of justice for his brother Scott Johnson’s murder—a homophobic hate crime. The 2023 Hulu docuseries Never Let Him Go tells the story of Scott’s life, death, and Steve’s fight for justice. He was a founding member of Sage Hill High School in Newport Beach, CA, and currently serves on the board of GlacierWorks, an organization raising awareness of the effects of climate change. Johnson received his BA from the University of Southern California in 1980 and an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School in 1985, where he is now a senior fellow working on a book about internet regulation. A longtime supporter of the American Repertory Theater, he was elected as a Trustee in 2012 and served as Chair from 2013 through 2017.
