The adventures of the Greek war hero Odysseus have been told and retold for millennia. Now, acclaimed writer and adaptor Kate Hamill (Sense & Sensibility, Vanity Fair, Dracula) turns a contemporary lens on Homer’s The Odyssey in a new play that examines the costs of war borne by combatants and civilians. Reimagining the stories of both Odysseus and his wife, Penelope, this new adaptation asks how we can learn to embrace healing and forgiveness to end cycles of violence and revenge.
After a two-week-long developmental workshop, actors with scripts in hand will present a free reading of this exciting new work, under commission by A.R.T.
This production includes sexually suggestive themes and descriptions of graphic violence.
Production support of The Odyssey is provided by The Bob and Alison Murchison New Work Development Fund and in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
