Proclamation 4: Borders/Boundaries explores the consequences of our choices and what keeps us apart. Their generation will inherit a world divided – haves and have-nots, heroes and cowards, belonging and alienation – and they have something to say about it. Proclamation 4: Borders/Boundaries is a soulful, funny, frightening and original devised theater piece that will make you question how far you’d go to break down the walls – willing or unwilling.
Proclamation is the A.R.T.’s annual performance and writing program for area high school students. An ensemble of rising high school juniors and seniors explore an urgent topic while developing an original theater piece. Through dialogues with experts from the community, creative writing, immersive research projects and group improvisation, the resulting performance digs deep into the personal, the political, and the call to act.
Ten students across Greater Boston, including Boston Latin School, Josiah Quincy Upper School, and Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, have collaborated after school with A.R.T. artists over the past eight weeks. They have explored the very urgent concept of “borders and boundaries” and created a theater piece inspired by their discoveries, under the direction of Marissa Roberts. This is a tuition-free program and ensemble-members are paid a stipend upon completion of the project.
