Artistic Director’s Welcome
Welcome to the world premiere of 1972!
A songwriter who has always interwoven music and activism, Chadwick Stokes is best known through his Boston-based bands DISPATCH and State Radio. 1972 began as a collection of songs inspired by Chadwick’s long love of train-hopping and then took off in a new direction in 2022 after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Performed as a heightened theatrical concert featuring Chadwick’s soulful and stirring songs, 1972 is about the power of unexpected kindness, and the fight for reproductive freedom championed by the Janes, an underground network of courageous women who risked everything to provide a choice to women with nowhere to turn in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
We are excited to welcome back Jessie Nelson, who was the book writer of Waitress, which premiered at the A.R.T. in 2015. My collaboration with Jessie on Waitress was rooted in a shared belief that musical theater can hold complexity—that stories can be both intimate and expansive, deeply personal and resonant to our times. As the director and co-book writer of 1972, Jessie brings her signature artistry and passion for stories about women finding strength through one another to her collaboration with Chadwick. We also welcome back choreographer Jill Johnson (Rhinoceros, The Arboretum Experience, In the Body of the World, Crossing, O.P.C.), founder of the Harvard Dance Project and former Director of Dance at Harvard, and associate director and choreographer Abbey O’Brien (ExtraOrdinary!, Jagged Little Pill, Waitress).
Select performances of 1972 will include Act II, a facilitated conversation with the audience about the play and its themes. On October 31 and November 13, we are especially honored to welcome members of the Janes: founder Heather Booth, Jeanne Galatzer-Levy, Sheila Avruch, and Abby Pariser. We are also collaborating with the Schlesinger Library at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute on a pop-up exhibition featuring primary source materials from its collections related to the history of the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union, the Janes, and reproductive rights and access to abortion in the US in and around 1972. For more information on this, as well as a public reading of Kate Hamill’s new play about the Janes, please see elsewhere on our website.
Lastly, we are grateful to our ongoing partnership with Harvard University’s undergraduate concentration in Theater, Dance & Media, which has made our residency here at Farkas Hall possible.
Thank you for joining us for 1972!
