David Henry Hwang

The Sound of a Voice (Librettist). Broadway: M. Butterfly (1988 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, and John Gassner awards, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize), Golden Child (1998 Tony nomination, 1997 Obie Award), Rodgers and Hammerstein's Flower Drum Song (book, premiered at Los Angeles's Mark Taper Forum, moved to Broadway in 2002), Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida (co-author, book). Other plays: FOB (1981 Obie Award), The Dance and the Railroad, Family Devotions, The House of Sleeping Beauties, The Sound of a Voice (New York Shakespeare Festival), Bondage (Actors Theatre of Louisville), Face Value, Trying to Find Chinatown. Opera libretti with Philip Glass: 1000 Airplanes on the Roof (presented at the American Repertory Theater in 1990) and The Voyage (Metropolitan Opera). Other opera libretti: The Silver River (with music by Bright Sheng, Lincoln Center Festival), and the upcoming Ainadamar (with music by Osvaldo Golijov, Tanglewood Music Center). Feature film scripts: M. Butterfly, Golden Gate, The Lost Empire, and Possession (co-writer). Songs: "Solo" (co-writer, released on the album Come by composer/performer Prince). Recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, Mr. Hwang sits on the council of the Dramatists Guild, and served by appointment of President Clinton on the President's Committee for the Arts and the Humanities.
