BIOGRAPHY

Dominique Serrand

Paris native Dominique Serrand is an Artistic Director and co-founder of Theatre de la Jeune Lune, which was founded in Paris in 1978 by graduates of the Jacques Lecoq school of physical theater, and moved to Minneapolis in 1985. A native of France, Mr. Serrand also studied at the National Circus School and the Winter Circus School, and co-founded the Compagnie de Saxe, a touring theater in western France. He co-wrote and directed Children of Paradise: Shooting a Dream, which inaugurated Jeune Lune's new performing facility and subsequently toured to Yale Repertory Theatre and La Jolla Playhouse. At the American Repertory Theater, he was the director and co-creator of Carmen, director of The Miser and Amerika, and co-creator and director of Don Juan Giovanni & Figaro, in which he also played the roles of Don Juan and Mr. Almaviva. His directing credits also include Heroes, The Kitchen, Lulu, The Bourgeois Gentleman, Romeo and Juliet, Three Musketeers, Tartuffe, The Magic Flute, Gulliver, A Swift Journey, Red Noses, 1789, The Pursuit of Happiness, and Queen Elisabeth. He has staged several operas including The Magic Flute, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, Figaro, and Carmen. He has also directed at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Actors' Theater of Louisville, The Guthrie Theater, and The Children's Theater, among others. As an actor he played the title characters in Christopher Columbus, August August August, Cyrano, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, and more. Mr. Serrand has been knighted by the French Government in the order of Arts and Letters.
