Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Tony Award-winning rock opera Evita follows the adored and reviled Eva Perón’s meteoric rise from an impoverished childhood to first lady of Argentina until her death at 33. Directed by Sammi Cannold (Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Hollywood & Entertainment, Endlings, Violet), this eagerly anticipated revival featuring unforgettable songs including “Buenos Aires” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” explores how we make sense of contradictions in legacy.

This production includes haze, prop firearms, occasional strong language, and stylized violence and sexuality.

Updated version of Evita comes to A.R.T.

The production aims to give audiences a truer look at the late first lady of Argentina Eva Peron, who died from cancer at age 33. While the A.R.T.’s version doesn’t change the music or dialogue, it makes the intentions of the characters clearer.

Audiences have long since become familiar with the show’s touchstones: Eva’s glittering white strapless Dior ball gown, her blonde bun, her sparkling earrings and diamond necklace, her arms raised in triumph. ‘Evita’ revival debuts at A.R.T.

Argentina’s legendary first lady Eva Perón has a life story that was always destined for the stage. From an impoverished childhood in the 1920s she found a passionate romance and became one of the most powerful figures in Argentine history, both beloved and reviled. Afro-Latina Broadway performer Shereen Pimentel, who plays Perón in the musical, didn’t know much about the character before this production. Now she’s a Perón expert.
